GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Yorik Sajbin (Fall River, Mass.) and freshman Eric Barry (Framingham, Mass.) helped UMass Dartmouth provide Head Coach Henry Almeida with his 100th career victory by accounting for both goals in a 2-0 Little East Conference men’s soccer triumph over Southern Maine Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
Sajbin gave the visiting Corsairs (7-4, 2-2 LEC) the only tally they would need in the 24th minute of play when he converted a feed from senior midfielder Junior Monteiro (New Bedford, Mass.) at the top of the box for his seventh goal of the season, and Barry provided an insurance marker for UMass Dartmouth in the 54th minute with a diving header on a pass from sophomore Declan Foley (Weymouth, Mass.). Sophomore Jake Castro (Swansea, Mass.) made that stand up in net by making a pair of saves to earn his sixth triumph and fourth clean sheet of the fall for the visitors, who have won two straight and three of their last four outings.
Almeida, already the all-time winningest coach in program history, reached the century mark in his 12th campaign with the Corsairs, as he sports an overall mark of 100-95-13 during his career.
Sophomore Cameron Atherton (New Milford, Conn.) recorded six saves in the setback for the host Huskies (0-11-3, 0-4-1 LEC), as UMass Dartmouth outshot Southern Maine by a 13-3 margin overall (8-2 on goal) and held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference clash on Wednesday evening at Cressy Field beginning at 7:00 pm, while Southern Maine entertains UMass Boston in a Little East outing on Wednesday evening at Hannaford Field that also begins at 7:00 pm.
