DANBURY, Conn. -- Three different players scored goals to lead Western Connecticut to a 3-1 Little East Conference men’s soccer victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Junior Matthew Restrepo (Bridgeport, Conn.) gave the host Colonials (12-4-1, 5-2 LEC) a 1-0 advantage in the 14th minute when he converted a pass from freshman Franz Muhaj (Bridgeport, Conn.) for his eighth goal of the season, and junior Afa Reyes (Bridgeport, Conn.) extended that margin to 2-0 just over eight minutes later with his ninth marker of the fall. That score held up until the 76th minute when senior midfielder Junior Monteiro (New Bedford, Mass.) collected his 10th goal of the year to slice the visiting Corsairs’ (7-7-1, 2-4-1 LEC) deficit in half, but freshman Kent Eannarino (Brookfield, Conn.) closed out the scoring 3:21 later for Western Connecticut with an insurance tally that accounted for the final margin.
Junior Daniel Szabo (Trumbull, Conn.) made six saves in 84-plus minutes of action to notch his 12th win of the season in goal for the Colonials, while sophomore Jake Castro (Swansea, Mass.) made five stops in suffering the setback in net for UMass Dartmouth. Western Connecticut outshot the Corsairs by a 14-10 margin overall (8-7 on goal) and held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth travels to New London, Conn. on Tuesday afternoon to square off with Coast Guard in a non-league outing beginning at 3:30 pm, while Western Connecticut hosts Becker in a non-league clash on Wednesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex that begins at 6:00 pm.
