BRIDGEWATER, MA-Host Bridgewater State won all three singles matches against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's tennis team after play was resumed in their Little East Conference quarter-final playoff match at the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts Thursday, and defeated the Corsairs, 5-1. The match was completed Thursday after it was suspended Tuesday because of inclement weather.

The Corsairs' number two doubles team of freshman Mike Giaquinto (East Falmouth, MA/East Falmouth HS) and sophomore Brian Lui (Medfield, MA/Medfield HS) had lost to Matt Mailhot and Mike Zagame, 8-0, prior to the suspension of play Tuesday. When play resumed, UMD's number one doubles team of senior Ken Sims (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) and freshman Mike Parker (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) tied the match when they defeated Armindo Rocha and Justin Lipomi, 8-6. Adam Laithy and Nick Amrose gave the Bears a 2-1 lead when they downed sophomore Mike Fink (Sagamore Beach, MA/ Sturgis Charter HS) and freshman Cody Zygmont (Swansea, MA/Case HS) at number three doubles, 8-5.

The Bears then won three singles matches to clinch the decision. Laithy defeated Giaquinto at number three singles, 6-2, 6-3; Zagame downed Lui at number four, 6-1, 6-3; and Amrose defeated Fink at number five, 6-4, 6-4. The match was ended when BSC clinched the decision.

"It was a close match, and, for a young team, I've seen a lot of improvement," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Tom Mendell. "We might have won the other three matches. We won the first set on two of the matches, and Ken Sims lost the first set in his match, but was winning the second set. I'm looking forward to next year."

Bridgewater State improved to 9-6 with the victory, while UMass Dartmouth dropped to 5-6 with the defeat. The Bears will return to action when they play at second-seeded Salem State Friday in the LEC semi-finals. The match was the final competition of the season for the Corsairs.
