PAWTUCKET, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth took a trio of weekly awards when the awards were announced by the league office on Monday, as Bruno Pires (New Bedford, Mass.) was named Track Rookie and Athlete of the Week while Jared Louf-Woods (Salem, Mass.) earned the Field Athlete of the Week recognition.
Pires got the outdoor season started strongly at the Bryant University's Black and Gold Invitational as the rookie raced to a first-place finish in the 800-meter. Despite being in a heat with just teammate Travis Dolcine (Somerville, Mass.), the New Bedford-native leaned toward the finish line to defeat the second-place time by just two-hundredths of a second. With that time, he not only won the race outright but positioned himself with the fifth-fastest time in outdoor program history.
Indoor Track and Field All-American Louf-Woods continued his string of impressive performances during the outdoor season opener. The senior re-wrote another school-record, this time in the hammer throw as his career-best toss of 62.45m (204-11) nestled him into second-place by more than 15 feet from the competitor in third place. In the shot put, Jared put forth a distance of 15.60m (51-2.25) to mark his second podium-worthy performance of the day, with the mark putting him in second place behind a Division I attendee.
The acknowledgments marked the first for either athlete during the outdoor schedule, with the Indoor Track and Field athlete in Louf-Woods garnering five awards during the previous season. With help from the two student-athletes, the Corsairs men's track and field team finished fourth at the Black and Gold Invitational, slotting ahead of six teams from Div. I or II.
