CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Five members of the 13th-ranked UMass Dartmouth men’s outdoor track & field team competed at the non-scoring MIT Final Qualifier on Thursday afternoon looking to improve upon their chances of traveling to next weekend’s NCAA Division III National Championships in Geneva, Ohio.
Senior Mike Tierney (Norton, Mass.) finished second in the 400 meter hurdles (55.82) for the Corsairs, who received a third place mark of 1.96 meters/6 feet, 5 inches in the high jump from fellow senior Joao Baptista (Malden, Mass.). Sophomore Bruno Pires (New Bedford, Mass.) also recorded a third place finish in the 800 meters (1:53.77) for UMass Dartmouth, while freshman Kaiden Swainamer (Lakeville, Mass.) was fourth in the shot put (15.29 meters/50 feet, 2 inches). Senior Steve Tencati (Clinton, Mass.) rounded out the Corsair quintet of competitors with an eighth place performance in the javelin, as he posted a mark of 50.73 meters/166 feet, 5 inches in the event.
Tencati and junior Jordan Entwistle (Northboro, Mass.) are set to represent the Corsairs at the NCAA Championships in the javelin, as Entwistle enters the weekend as the top national seed while Tencati is ranked fourth. Junior George Papoulis (Haverhill, Mass.) is seeded fifth nationally in the 800 meters for UMass Dartmouth, as the field for next weekend’s championships is set to be announced on Saturday morning.
