Cross Country Finishes Sixth and Eighth at Keene State

KEENE, NH- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth cross country team ran well at their 2012 season opener, the Keene State Alumni Invitational, at Keene State Saturday.

The women were sixth in a 10-team field with 174 points, MIT finished first with 19 points. The Corsairs were eighth of 10 teams in the men's race with 214 points, while the Engineers also took first place with 27 points.

For the women, sophomore Katie Sheehan (Scituate, MA/Scituate HS) was 16th in 12:37, sophomore Renee Laurencelle (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) was 27th in 13:01, freshman Katisha Bellegarde (Methuen, MA/Methuen HS) was 33rd in 13:17, sophomore Caitlin Dorr (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro HS) was 48th in 13:56, sophomore Samantha Roderigues (Somerset, MA/Somerset HS) was 50th in 14:06, sophomore Jess Connor (Worcester, MA/Doherty HS) was 53rd in 14:15, and sophomore Meg Cutler (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro HS) was 57th in 14:35.

Junior Chris Jordan (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) led the men, finishing 26th in 17:17. Junior Zach Switaj (Tamworth, NH/Kennett Regional HS) was 52nd in 17:49, sophomore Eric Karstunen (Pembroke, MA/Pembroke HS) was 68th in 18:11, freshman Michael Val (Dartmouth, MA/Greater New Bedford Regional Vo Tech) was 71st in 18:15, sophomore Scott Bernazzani (Abington, MA/Cardinal Spellman HS) was 74th in 18:23, freshman Ryan Hayes (Kingston, MA/Silver Lake HS) was 85th in 18:59, freshman Mike Bodden (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury HS) was 87th in 19:00, and sophomore David Yumping (Brockton, MA/Brockton HS) was 94th in 19:23.

"This race was kind of like spring training for us, and it was a pretty strong field," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Jon Hird. "MIT is nationally ranked, AIC is a strong Division II school, Keene State is very strong and UMass Lowell is a top school in the Northeast Conference. We had a lot of new faces. Chris Jordan ran very well, as did Katie Sheehan, as our number one runners, and Michael Vaz ran really well for a freshman."

The Corsairs will return to action when they visit the Roger Williams Invitational next Saturday.
