Men's Cross Country Finishes Ninth In UMass Dartmouth Invitational

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Both Corsair cross country teams posted strong performances on their home course on Saturday afternoon at the 47th UMass Dartmouth Invitational that took place on the Bob Dowd Course, as the men’s squad finished ninth overall while the women’s team recorded a 20th place finish.

Freshman Imanuel Fernandes (Brockton, Mass.) continued his solid rookie campaign on the men’s side with a 30th place finish in a field of 257 competitors, as he covered the 8K layout in a time of 26:15.12.  Fellow freshman Austin Carroll (Norton, Mass.) followed in 38th place with a time of 26:26.34, while sophomore Steve Stromski (Melrose, Mass.) was next in 59th place with a time of 27:08.91.  Freshmen Jadiel Pinales (Lowell, Mass.) and Vincent Gardner (Portsmouth, R.I.) rounded out UMass Dartmouth’s scoring with respective times of 27:21.15 and 28:44.91 that were good for respective 68th and 121st place finishes, as the Corsairs amassed a team score of 307 points.  WPI took top honors in the event with a score of 61 pints, as the Engineers bested runner-up UMass Lowell (83) and third place Trinity (88).

Junior Taylor Walsh (Groveland, Mass.) led the way once again on the women’s side for UMass Dartmouth, as she covered the 5K course in a time of 19:59.18 to finish 53rd in a field of 263 runners.  Senior Jess O’Reilly (Millis, Mass.) followed in 69th place with a time of 20:14.22, while graduate student Kira Judd (Garrettsville, Ohio) was next in 143rd place with a time of 21:27.74.  Sophomore Alexa Van Voorhis (Raynham, Mass.) and junior Stephanie Brogdon (Chelmsford, Mass.) rounded out the Corsair scoring with respective 185th and 187th place times of 22:22.58 and 22:27.62, as the hosts posted team score of 585 points.  Holy Cross copped the team title with a score of 83 points, as the Crusaders topped runner-up Mount Holyoke (92) and third place WPI (129).

Both UMass Dartmouth squads return to action on Saturday, October 5th with competition at the Keene State Invitational, as the men’s race begins at 11:00 am followed by the women’s race at Noon.
