Women's Basketball Flies Past Roger Williams To Improve To 4-0 On Season

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Senior Nakira Examond (New Bedford, Mass.) scored 22 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead four players in double figures as UMass Dartmouth posted an 88-62 non-league college women’s basketball victory over Roger Williams Tuesday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center.

The host Corsairs, who are off to a 4-0 start for the fourth time in five seasons, jumped out to a seven-point (21-14) first quarter advantage and broke things open with an 11-0 run in the opening five minutes of the second stanza to extend that edge to 22 points (44-22) at the break.  UMass Dartmouth maintained a 20-plus point lead for most of the third quarter before the visiting Hawks (2-2) got to within 16 (60-44) on freshman Hannah Driscoll’s (Hampton, N.H.) jumper with 44 seconds to play in the period, but the hosts scored 16 of the first 23 points of the final frame to build their advantage to as much as 28 points in the final five minutes of action.

Freshman Shaelyn Carriero (Fall River, Mass.) scored a career-high 15 points and grabbed three rebounds off the bench for the Corsairs, who received 13 points, six boards and six assists from junior Ashley Brown (New Bedford, Mass.).  Senior Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, Mass.) added 11 points, four caroms and three steals for the winners, who received seven points and five assists from senior Danyel Gonzalez (Pawtucket, R.I.) along with six points and five rebounds from sophomore Lauren Empey (Middleboro, Mass.).  UMass Dartmouth shot 43 percent (34-79) from the field and recorded 24 assists on the night, as the hosts held a 50-24 rebounding advantage and converted 19 turnovers into 16 points.

Junior Sam Leone (Ashland, Mass.) scored 16 points to pace the scoring column in the setback for Roger Williams, who received 15 points from junior Gabby Jerahian (Quincy, Mass.) along with nine points and four assists from sophomore Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.).  Freshman Karli Opalka (Southbury, Conn.) added eight boards and a game-high eight rebounds for the Hawks, who shot 34 percent (22-64) from the floor and connected for six three-pointers for the contest.

UMass Dartmouth will be idle until Wednesday, November 28th when the Corsairs host Southern Maine in their Little East Conference opener that tips off at 5:30 pm, while Roger Williams entertains Rhode Island College in a non-league outing on Sunday afternoon in Bristol, R.I. that tips off at 3:00 pm.
