Women's Basketball Sets School Scoring Mark In Eighth Straight Victory

DANBURY, Conn. --  Seniors Nakira Examond (New Bedford, Mass.) and Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, Mass.) combined for 49 points and a 76 percent shooting effort (22-29) from the field as UMass Dartmouth set a school single-game scoring mark by posting a 110-83 Little East Conference women’s basketball victory over Western Connecticut Monday evening at Feldman Arena.

The visiting Corsairs (18-3, 11-1 LEC), who extended their winning streak to eight straight with the triumph, topped the previous team single-game record of 105 points that was also set against the host Colonials (10-11, 4-8 LEC) in the very same building on January 27, 2018.  In the last three matchups alone, UMass Dartmouth has averaged 106 points against Western Connecticut that includes a 103-66 victory in their first meeting this season back on January 10th at the Tripp Athletic Center.

The Corsairs snapped a 7-7 tie by ending the first quarter on a 21-10 run to build a 12-point cushion (28-16) after 10 minutes of play, but the Colonials crept back to within four (40-32) on sophomore Asiah Knight’s (Norwalk, Conn.) jumper with 2:50 remaining in the first half.  UMass Dartmouth scored the final nine points before intermission to take a 49-36 edge at the break, and after Western Connecticut pulled to within nine in the first minute of the second half, the visitors used another 9-0 outburst to help push its advantage to as much as 22 points in the third stanza before settling for a 74-58 edge heading into the final frame.  Examond (13) and freshman Shaelyn Carreiro (Fall River, Mass.) combined for 21 points in a fourth quarter that saw the Corsairs erupt for 36 points, as UMass Dartmouth blistered the nets at a 77 percent clip (17-22) to account for the final margin.

Examond finished with 27 points (11-14 from the floor) and eight rebounds in the victory for the Corsairs, who received 22 points (11-15 from the field), four boards and four assists from Korzec.  Carreiro came off the bench to add 14 points on a 7-of-9 shooting effort for the winners, who received 13 points, nine assists and six caroms from junior Ashley Brown (New Bedford, Mass.).  Freshman Jordan Moretti (Johnston, R.I.) added eight points, a career-high 10 assists and six rebounds for UMass Dartmouth, which received eight points from sophomore Lauren Empey (Middleboro, Mass.) along with a career-best seven assists, five points, four steals and four boards from sophomore Meagan Donovan (Abington, Mass.).  Senior Danyel Gonzalez (Pawtucket, R.I.), junior Kayla McMahon (Hanover, Mass.) and freshman Jessica Carroll (Deep River, Conn.) combined for 13 points for the visitors, who shot 61 percent (48-79) overall and recorded 36 assists while netting 84 points in the paint on the night.

Senior Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, N.Y.) scored 14 points and grabbed three rebounds to lead four players in double figures in the setback for Western Connecticut, which received 13 points, five assists and four boards from junior Gabrielle Hurlbert (Thomaston, Conn.).  Knight collected 10 points and six caroms for the Colonials, who also received 10 points from junior Genesis Torres (Stratford, Conn.).  The hosts shot 36 percent (28-77) from the field and connected for eight three-pointers in a contest that saw the Corsairs hold a 44-40 rebounding advantage.

UMass Dartmouth hosts Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference outing on Wednesday evening at the Tripp Athletic Center that tips-off at 5:30 pm, while Western Connecticut travels to Keene, N.H. on Wednesday evening for a Little East matchup with Keene State that also tips-off at 5:30 pm.
