BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Sophomore Shaelyn Carreiro (Fall River, Mass.) notched a double-double effort of 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 66-62 non-league college women’s basketball victory over Bridgewater State Tuesday evening at the Tinsley Center.

The host Bears (0-2) scored seven of the first eight points after intermission to claw back to within eight (36-28) on sophomore Maggie Hester’s (Braintree, Mass.) lay-in, but senior Ashley Brown (New Bedford, Mass.) sparked a 13-3 UMass Dartmouth run in a six-plus minute stretch that pushed the visitors’ lead to 49-31 late in the third quarter.

Two fast break lay-up conversions by Carreiro (coupled with a dribble drive by Moretti) gave UMass Dartmouth a seven-point lead (66-59) with 39 seconds remaining, and the Bears used a three-pointer from sophomore Hannah Dziadyk (Wakefield, Mass.) with 14 seconds left to account for the final margin but get no closer on their final possession.
