DANBURY, Conn. -- Junior Carly Matasavage’s (Middlebury, Conn.) goal in the 47th minute held up as the game-winner and lifted Western Connecticut to a 1-0 Little East Conference field hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth Wednesday afternoon at the Westside Athletic Complex.
Matasavage’s deciding marker (her second of the year) came just over 11 minutes after intermission for the host Colonials (7-4, 5-2 LEC), and sophomore Neve Manion (Newington, Conn.) made that stand up by making a pair of saves in net to earn her seventh win and fourth shutout of the season. Senior Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.) recorded 12 stops in goal, including nine in a scoreless first half of action, in the setback for the visiting Corsairs (2-9, 1-5 LEC) as Western Connecticut outshot UMass Dartmouth by a 23-4 margin overall (13-2 on goal) while holding a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Fitchburg, Mass. on Saturday morning to take on Fitchburg State in a Little East Conference clash beginning at 10:00 am, while Western Connecticut heads to Gorham, Maine on Saturday morning to square off with Southern Maine in a Little East encounter that begins at 11:00 am.
