Field Hockey Drops 6-0 Season Opening Decision At Simmons

BRIGHTON, Mass. --  Sophomore Emily Plummer (San Diego, Calif.) netted a hat trick to lead Simmons to a 6-0 non-league college field hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Daly Field.

Markers by Plummer and senior Olivia Trull (Lowell, Mass.) in the opening 5:45 of the contest staked the host Sharks (1-2) to a 2-0 lead after the opening quarter of action, and Plummer’s second tally of the day was sandwiched by goals off the sticks of sophomore Haley Dover (West Springfield, Mass.) and junior Lily D’Anna (Woodstock, Vt.) in the second stanza that gave Simmons a 5-0 advantage at the break.  Plummer completed her hat trick with 3:04 remaining in the match, and junior Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) made that stand up with 11 saves in the Sharks’ cage to earn the shutout triumph.

D’Anna assisted on Trull’s goal to finish with a pair of points for the winners, as junior Katelyn Banalewicz (Fall River, Mass.) made six stops in the season opening setback for the visiting Corsairs (0-1).  UMass Dartmouth outshot Simmons by a 15-13 margin overall and held a 7-3 edge in penalty corners for the contest.

UMass Dartmouth heads to Newport, R.I. on Thursday evening to take on Salve Regina in a non-league outing beginning at 6:00 pm, while Simmons travels to Worcester, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon for a non-league clash with WPI that begins at 4:30 pm.
