Field Hockey Drops 4-0 LEC Decision At Western Connecticut

DANBURY, Conn. --  Senior Morgan Matthews (Bethel, Conn.) netted a pair of goals to lead Western Connecticut a 4-0 Little East Conference field hockey victory over UMass Dartmouth Wednesday evening at the Westside Athletic Complex.

Matthews gave the host Colonials (10-2, 6-1 LEC) the only goal they would need 7:05 into the contest, and senior Lili Dickey (Westbrook, Conn.) extended that margin to 2-0 with 42 seconds remaining in the first half off a penalty corner pass from senior Jacalyn Doerwald (Washington, Conn.).  Western Connecticut struck again 6:04 into the third stanza when sophomore Nora Swift (Brookfield, Conn.) converted a Dickey feed, and Matthews accounted for the final margin in the early stages of the fourth quarter when she took a pass from senior Carly Matasavage (Middlebury, Conn.) in front of the cage for her second tally of the night.

Junior Neve Manion (Newington, Conn.) picked up the win without having to make a save in goal for the Colonials, while junior Katelyn Banalewicz (Fall River, Mass.) made 10 stops in the setback for the visiting Corsairs (4-7, 2-4 LEC).  Western Connecticut took 25 of the 26 shots in the contest and held an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners on the evening.

UMass Dartmouth heads to Salem, Mass. on Saturday afternoon for a Little East Conference clash with Salem State beginning at Noon, while Western Connecticut travels to Castleton, Vt. on Saturday afternoon to square off with Castleton in a Little East match that begins at 4:00 pm.
