NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team defeated host Bridgewater State 3-1 in a non-conference match at Swenson Field Tuesday evening.
The Corsairs ran their unbeaten streak to nine as they added two second half goals to take down the Bears. Senior midfielder Vanessa Demello (Fall River, MA/Durfee) opened the scoring in the 15th minute when she converted a free kick from just outside the penalty area as it found the back of the net after hitting the post. Demelo would tally the only goal of the opening half as UMD took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the 66th minute sophomore forward Maura Gonsalves (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) scored her team leading 10th goal of the season off a pass from junior defender Kathleen Landers (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS). With the goal Gonsalves has now scored in three straight games for UMD.
The Bears would cut the Corsairs lead in half 15 minutes later when Lauren Bandoian tallied her second goal of the year, converting a pass from Caley McClendon. The Corsairs would answer back less than a minute later as junior forward Tori Pierce (Tiverton, RI/Tiverton HS) found the back of the net for the fifth time this season dribbling past the Bears defenders and sending shot bouncing off the post and in.
The Corsairs outshot the Bears, 15-8. Junior goalkeeper Krista Chauvin (Seekonk, MA/Seekonk HS/Stonehill) made four saves for UMD, while Kerry Condon made three saves and Kristen Rowe made four for BSU.
UMass Dartmouth improved to 9-1-1 with the victory, while BSU dropped to 5-6-2 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host UMass Boston Saturday.
