NEW LONDON, Conn.-The Coast Guard women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to UMass Dartmouth on Sunday afternoon. With the loss Coast Guard drops to 2-3-0 on the season while UMass Dartmouth improves to 2-1-1.

The Corsairs got on the board first when senior Jillian Van Ness got free on a breakaway attempt in the 23rd minute and clanged the ball off the crossbar. However, the rebound fell right at the feet of junior Maura Gonsalves who blasted home a one-timer to beat Coast Guard junior Holly Moore for the early 1-0 advantage.

Moore did everything but stand on her head to keep Coast Guard in the contest in the first half, twice stopping great scoring chances by freshman Lucy Jensen. First in the 34th minute, a shot from about 12 yards out was deflected over the bar with one hand to keep the deficit a manageable one.

With the half winding down, in the 43rd minute, following a shot by Van Ness that was blocked by a Coast Guard defender, the ball fell at Jensen's feet but with Moore rolling around on the ground she was able to deflect the ball away from point blank range to be cleared and avoid any damage.

The Bears came out much more aggressively and put more pressure on the Corsairs after the half-time break but were unable to mount any significant threats to level the match. Coast Guard did get the ball into the box a couple of times in the final three minutes but were not able to put any attempts on frame.

Throughout the course of the game, UMass Dartmouth controlled the midfield and that seemed to be the major difference as they were able to generate more chances, out-shooting the Bears 26-6 and holding an 11-3 edge in corner kicks.

Coast Guard was, however, better conditioned and were able to mount a furious rally late in the game getting the ball up field almost at will against what appeared to be a very tired UMass Dartmouth defense.

Moore got her second start of the year in goal for Coast Guard and made nine saves on the afternoon as her record moves to 1-1-0 on the year. Freshman Nicole Butts recorded three saves in the UMass Dartmouth victory to move her mark to 2-1-1 on the season.

The Bears will return to action on Thursday, September 12th when they play host to Nichols College. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
