NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Goals by freshman Kaitlyn Bernier (Dartmouth, Mass.) and senior Courtney Hewitt (North Attleboro, Mass.) in the final 17-plus minutes of play lifted UMass Dartmouth to a 2-0 non-league college women’s soccer victory over Albertus Magnus Sunday afternoon at Celentano Field.
Bernier once again provided the game-winner for the visiting Corsairs (2-0), who are off to their best start in seven years, as her second tally of the season broke a scoreless draw in the 73rd minute of action. Hewitt provided an insurance marker (her first of the year) nearly five minutes later, and sophomore Jaimee O’Brien (West Springfield, Mass.) made that margin stand up in goal with a five-save effort to notch her second straight shutout.
Junior Cassidy Scofield (Shelton, Conn.) suffered the setback in net for the host Falcons (0-2) after allowing both tallies and making two second half saves in relief of senior Lexie Fenn (Oakville, Conn.), who recorded five stops in the opening 45 minutes of play. UMass Dartmouth outshot Albertus Magnus by a 13-10 margin overall (9-5 on goal), as the Falcons took four of the five corner kicks in the contest. All four of the Corsairs’ goals this season have come in the second half of action, with Bernier netting the deciding tally both today as well as in Friday’s opening 2-0 win over Fredonia.
UMass Dartmouth heads to Bridgewater, Mass. on Thursday evening to take on Bridgewater State in a non-league clash beginning at 7:00 pm, while Albertus Magnus travels to New London, Conn. on Wednesday afternoon to square off with Mitchell in a non-conference match that begins at 4:00 pm.
