Women's Soccer Closes Out Campaign With 1-0 LEC Setback At Castleton

CASTLETON, Vt. --  Freshman Tatum Shappy’s (Milton, Vt.) goal with 9:44 remaining lifted Castleton to a 1-0 victory over UMass Dartmouth in the Little East Conference women’s soccer finale for both teams Saturday evening at Dave Wolk Stadium.

Each team had chances to grab second half leads before Shappy’s tally lifted the host Spartans (9-9, 4-4 LEC) to the triumph, as junior Loren Henderson (Rutland, Vt.) made seven saves to pick up the clean sheet in goal.  Freshman Katherine Hubbard (Haverhill, Mass.) made 10 second half stops in suffering the setback in net for the visiting Corsairs (3-15, 1-7 LEC), who received four saves in the opening 45 minutes of action from junior Jaimee O’Brien (West Springfield, Mass.).  Castleton outshot UMass Dartmouth by a 23-18 margin overall (15-7 on goal), but the Corsairs held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks for the contest.

Castleton is seeded sixth in the 2019 Little East Conference Championships, as the Spartans travel to third-seeded Keene State for a league quarterfinal round match Tuesday.  Tonight’s contest marked the season finale for UMass Dartmouth.
