DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Sophomore Carlie Dreyfus’s (Stafford Springs, Conn.) in the 72nd minute lifted Eastern Connecticut to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over UMass Dartmouth in a Little East Conference women’s soccer match played Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.
The visiting Warriors (2-5, 1-0 LEC) overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit after senior Ella Rath’s (Pawcatuck, Conn.) direct kick from 30 yards out gave the host Corsairs (1-4, 0-1 LEC) the early edge 9:31 into the contest. That score held up until senior Stephanie Sanchez (Manchester, Conn.) evened matters in the 57th minute on a feed from senior Abbey Fitzsimmons (West Hartford, Conn.) from the left side, and the Warriors grabbed a 2-1 cushion five minutes later when freshman Juliette Hogan (Preston, Conn.) tallied on an assist from sophomore Haley Montesanto (East Haven, Conn.). Rath converted her second long range direct kick to knot the score for the final time in the 69th minute to set up the game-winner from Dreyfus, who converted a feed from junior Nina Langton (Bolton, Conn.) on the deciding goal.
Senior Erin Collins (Millis, Mass.) picked up her second win of the season with five-save effort for Eastern Connecticut, while junior Jaimee O’Brien (West Springfield, Mass.) also made five stops in the setback for UMass Dartmouth. The Corsairs held a 12-10 edge in overall shots, but the Warriors had an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal while taking both corner kicks on the afternoon.
UMass Dartmouth heads to Newport, R.I. on Tuesday afternoon to square off with Salve Regina in a non-league outing beginning at 3:30 pm, while Eastern Connecticut will be idle until next Saturday, September 28th when the Warriors entertain UMass Boston in a Little East Conference clash in Mansfield, Conn. that begins at 4:00 pm.
