PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Sophomore Sarah Hicks (Sutton, Mass.) scored the golden goal with 35 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift Plymouth State to a 4-3 Little East Conference women’s soccer victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Arold Field.
Hicks converted a pass from junior Mallory Lloyd (Hartland, Vt.) on the deciding tally for the host Panthers (4-4, 1-0 LEC), who overcame an early 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 lead on markers from Lloyd and sophomore Taylor Siewierski (Colebrook, N.H.) in a 20-minute span in the first half. Senior Ella Rath (Pawcatuck, Conn.) evened matters for the visiting Corsairs (1-6, 0-2 LEC) with 7:54 to play before intermission on a feed from fellow senior Nerida Montrond (Lynn, Mass.), but Plymouth State regained a 3-2 cushion in the 75th minute when junior Sofia Karlsson (Vaxjo, Sweden) scored on a Lloyd pass. Rath forced the extra sessions with her second goal of the day for UMass Dartmouth five minutes later, and after a scoreless and shotless first overtime period, Hicks provided the heroics for the Panthers in the closing seconds of action.
Sophomore Jordan Meier (Holderness, N.H.) notched an assist on Siewierski’s first half tally for Plymouth State, while sophomore Jillian Prout (Dartmouth, Mass.) gave the Corsairs the early edge with her second goal of the season 6:58 into the match. Sophomore Cat Robbins (Franklin, Mass.) picked up the win in net for the Panthers with an eight-save effort, while junior Jaimee O’Brien (West Springfield, Mass.) made nine stops in the setback for UMass Dartmouth. Plymouth State outshot the Corsairs by a 29-15 margin overall (14-11 on goal) and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks for the contest.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Milton, Mass. on Monday evening to take on Curry in a non-league match beginning at 7:00 pm, while Plymouth State heads to Gorham, Maine on Wednesday evening for a Little East Conference clash with Southern Maine that also begins at 7:00 pm.
