Women's Soccer Suffers Tough 1-0 Little East Setback To Southern Maine

DARTMOUTH, Mass. --  Junior Ciera Berthiaume’s (Windham, Maine) goal eight minutes into the match lifted Southern Maine to a 1-0 Little East Conference women’s soccer victory over UMass Dartmouth Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.

Berthiaume took a pass from fellow junior Abigail Mazza (Rumford, Maine) and lofted a shot to the left corner from 35 yards out on the lone tally for the visiting Huskies (5-8-1, 1-4 LEC), and freshman Kayla Gorman (Windham, Maine) made that stand up with a six-save effort in goal to record the clean sheet.  Gorman got some big assistance from her back line in windy conditions, as Southern Maine defenders made a pair of stops on the goal line that included a potential tying goal in the closing minutes of play.

Junior Jaimee O’Brien (West Springfield, Mass.) suffered the tough-luck setback in making a pair of stops for the host Corsairs (2-10, 0-4 LEC), who held a 15-8 advantage in total shots (8-3 on goal).  The Huskies held a 9-5 edge in corner kicks for the contest.

UMass Dartmouth travels to Providence, R.I. on Wednesday afternoon to take on Rhode Island College in a Little East Conference outing beginning at 4:00 pm, while Southern Maine heads to Boston on Wednesday evening for a Little East clash with UMass Boston that begins at 7:00 pm.
