Women's Soccer Suffers 2-0 Non-Conference Setback At Worcester State

WORCESTER, Mass. --  Goals by junior Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) and sophomore Leah Fitzgerald (Upton, Mass.) in the final 14-plus minutes of play lifted Worcester State to a 2-0 non-league college women’s soccer victory over UMass Dartmouth Wednesday evening at Coughlin Field.

Maldonado gave the host Lancers (7-7-2) the only tally they would need when she netted her ninth marker of the season in the 76th minute, and Fitzgerald iced Worcester State’s triumph with her first goal of the season that came in the closing 20 seconds of action to account for the final margin.

Junior Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) made eight saves to pick up her eighth win of the season in goal for the Lancers, while freshman Katherine Hubbard (Haverhill, Mass.) suffered the setback in net for the visiting Corsairs (3-14) with four second half stops.  Junior Jaimee O’Brien (West Springfield, Mass.) made four saves in the opening 45 minutes of play for UMass Dartmouth, as Worcester State outshot the Corsairs by a 21-10 margin overall (11-8 on goal) in a contest that saw each team take five corner kicks.

UMass Dartmouth heads to Castleton, Vt. on Saturday evening to close out its 2019 campaign by taking on Castleton in a Little East Conference clash beginning at 6:00 pm, while Worcester State hosts Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field that begins at Noon.
