FORT MYERS, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team dropped both games of their doubleheader against Smith and Fredonia State on the second day of their spring trip at the Lee County Sports Complex Tuesday. The Corsairs lost to the Pioneers, 4-3, and the Blue Devils, 8-2.
In the opener, run-scoring hits by freshman shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural Tech HS) and junior pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) and an RBI fielder's choice by junior first baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS) staked the Corsairs to a 3-0 lead. But the Pioneers rallied, scoring three times in the sixth inning on a three-run homer. UMass Dartmouth threatened in the seventh, but junior outfielder Elizabeth Mulready (Rockland, MA/Rockland HS) was thrown out at the plate for the second out.
The Blue Devils got the jump on UMD in the nightcap. Junior Ashley Felaccio (Acushnet, MA/Fairhaven HS/Massasoit CC) started and took the loss.
"The first game was a heartbreaker," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "Emily Pontes hit the ball well and had a great day in the field. We played a lot better today, we cut down on our errors, we got the offense going, and we fought hard, we had runners on base in almost every inning. We definitely improved from the first day."
The Corsairs are now 0-4, while Smith is 1-4 and Fredonia State is 9-0. UMD will continue their spring trip when they play MCLA and Heidelberg Wednesday. Smith will play Curry and Salem State Wednesday, while Fredonia will play Franklin & Marshall and Curry Thursday.
