NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team swept all three doubles matches and went on to defeat visiting Southern Maine, 7-2, in the Corsairs' 2010 Little East Conference opener at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Saturday.

Senior Amy Lopes (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) and freshman Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA/Case HS) allowed the Corsairs to clinch the win when they defeated freshman Rachel Miller (Portland, ME/Deering HS) and junior Katelyn Ouellette (Lewiston, ME/Lewiston HS) at the top two singles positions. Lopes won, 6-0, 6-2, while Pelletier was victorious, 6-0, 6-0.

Lopes and junior Alexa Fiorita (Reading, MA/Reading HS) had staked the Corsairs to a 1-0 lead when they defeated Ouellette and sophomore Tegan Talbot (Topsham, ME/Mount Ararat HS) at number one doubles, 8-3. Pelletier combined with freshman Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) to defeat Miller and freshman Emily Boutin (Old Town, ME) at number two, 8-4, and freshman Angela Pollard (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth HS) teamed with freshman Allison Furtado (Fairhaven, MA/Fairhaven HS) to defeat senior Erica Robertson (St. Albans, VT/Bellows Free Academy) and freshman Sarah Moody (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough HS), 8-5.

"We played well today," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Amy and Alexa led us by coming out and winning at number one doubles, and Amy defeated a good freshman from Southern Maine at number one singles. Nicole Pelletier did an outstanding job in singles, and she and Elizabeth Cignoli pulled out the last four games to win their doubles match. Our third doubles team came back and did a nice job as well. It was a good showing for us against a team that looks like they will be reckoned with in the future."

The Corsairs improved to 2-0 and 1-0 in the LEC with the victory, while the Huskies dropped to 2-2 and 0-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Plymouth State next Saturday. Southern Maine will host Johnson State Sunday.
