Women's Tennis Defeats UMass Boston, 7-2

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's tennis team won five of the six singles matches and defeated visiting UMass Boston,7-2 , in a Little East Conference match at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Tuesday.

The Corsairs took two of three doubles matches, and then won the first three singles matches to clinch the win in the match. Junior Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) defeated freshman Anitra Kloczewiak (Newton, MA/Newton North HS) at number one singles, 6-0, 6-0, freshman Juliet Levangie (Middleboro, MA/Coyle-Cassidy HS) downed junior Brittany Engel (Freehold, NJ/Freehold HS) at number six, 6-0, 6-3, and then sophomore Courtney Morey (Mashpee, MA/Mashpee HS) defeated senior Jillian Hurd (Taunton, MA/Taunton HS) at number five singles, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the decision.

Sophomore Kelsey Grossmann (Holliston, MA/Holliston HS) and junior Amber Ubertini (Dalton, MA/ Wahconah HS) had defeated senior Emily Johnson (Saugus, MA/Saugus HS) and freshman Abigail Balme (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro HS), 9-8 (7-5) at number two doubles to put UMD ahead, 2-1, entering singles play. Dalrymple and Levangie defeated Engel and Hurd at number three doubles , 8-4, and Kloczewiak and junior Carina Gonzalez (Bridgewater, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) defeated lopes and Morey at number one doubles, 8-5.

"UMass Boston is a much improved team, which obviously showed in the doubles," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Ralph Perry. "Amy came back in singles after she and Courtney lost in doubles, and Courtney came through with the win that gave us five points and clinched the match. Kelsey Grossmann and Carlina Gonzalez played a great match at number three singles, and Kelsey pulled it out in the end in a tie-breaker."

The Corsairs improved to 4-0 and 3-0 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Beacons dropped to 2-3 and 0-2 in LEC play with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Simmons Thursday. UMass Boston will host Bridgewater State Saturday.
