Jones Powers UMass Dartmouth To 4th Place At Corsair Classic

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Sophomore Summer Jones (East Bridgewater, Mass.) captured the 400-meter dash to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's outdoor track and field team to a fourth place finish this afternoon at the annual Corsair Classic Invitational.

Colby College captured the team championship with 139 total points, outdistancing Worcester State University by 23 markers.  Bridgewater State University was third with 84 points followed by the Corsairs (55) and Husson University (49) to complete the top-five of the 21-team field.

Jones earned 10 team points with her first place finish in the 400-meter dash, defeating the 40-person field with a time of one minute, 00.55 seconds.  Sophomore LaQuaysia Anderson-Jenkins (Brighton, Mass.) finished fourth in the race (1:01.26) to put an additional four points in the UMass Dartmouth team ledger.

Freshman Barbara Okafor (Hyde Park, Mass./Boston Latin) was the third runner to cross the finish line in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 12.95 seconds.  Sophomore Michel-Le Meranda (Somerville, Mass.) scored five team points in the 400-meter hurdles by clearing the course in a fourth-place time of one minute, 10.12 seconds.

The Corsairs turned in a strong performance in the field events, scoring in six competitions.    Freshman Esther Nkwah (Roslindale, Mass./Boston Community Leadership) recorded a leap of 10.52 meters (34-06.25) to place third in the triple jump.  Junior Bailey Burke (South Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) scored in a pair of throwing events for UMD with a fourth-place performance in the hammer throw (39.65m, 130-01) and sixth in the discus (32.04m, 105-01).

Junior Meghan Cutler (Attleboro, Mass.) garnered three points in the high jump when she cleared 1.45 meters (4-09.00).  Freshman Hunter Carden (Branford, Conn.) surpassed 2.75 meters (9-00.25) in the pole vault to finish sixth overall. Sophomore Ashley Motta (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) unleashed a mark of 33.51 meters  (109-11) to place seventh in the javelin field. 

UMass Dartmouth will return to action on Saturday, April 12, when the Corsairs travel to Westfield State University.
