Four Qualify for New England Division III Championships at AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Both University of Massachusetts Dartmouth outdoor track and field teams combined for 16 top-10 finishes, including three event wins on the day, in the Seventh Annual Yellow Jacket Invitational, held at American International College on Saturday. 

The Basics
Men's Score: 7th (48) of 20 teams
Women's Score: 13th (21) of 18 teams

Freshman Caitlyn Demers (Dartmouth, Mass.) was one of four members of the UMass Dartmouth track and field team to qualify for the New England Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships later this srping. Demers' time of 1:06.87 gave her the event win the 400-meter hurdles in the field of 25.

Sophomore Michael Tierney (Norton, Mass.) collected a sixt- place finish in the men's 400-meter hurdles and tripped the timer at 58.29, just beating the 58.40 qualifying mark.  Fellow sophomore Alex MacMillan (Brockton, Mass.) took third in the 100-meter dash. His time of 11.14 puts him ninth in New England, and first in the Little East Conference so far this season.

Freshman Hilda Kusi (Framingham, Mass.) qualified on the women's side of the 100-meter dash. Her eighth place finish was clocked at 12.90, the fastest time for a freshman in the LEC this spring.

Event Winners

Sophomore Joao Baptista (Somerville, Mass.) successfully cleared 6-4.75 (1.95m) to set a new personal outdoor best in the high jump. The sophomore was able to outleap the rest of the field by two inches. Classmate Steve Tencati (Clinton, Mass.) joined Baptista in the winner's circle, after throwing 196-05 (59.88m) to win the javelin by two feet.

In the Field
Senior Hunter Carden (Branford, Conn.) picked up a sixth place finish in the pole vault. The senior was able to get over the 9-2.25 (2.80m) bar to collect the top-10 finish. Meaghan Shurtleff (Dartmouth, Mass.) also tallied a sixth place finish, competing in the triple jump. The Dartmouth native, was able to jump 33-4.00 (10.16m) for sixth in the field of 28. 

On the men's side, Jared Louf-Woods (Salem, Mass.) threw 44-7.50 (13.52m) for fourth place in the shot put. Fellow thrower Greg Betsold (Turners Falls, Mass.) turned in a pair of top-10 finishes with at sixth place mark in the discus (129-09, 39.54m), and seventh in the hammer (158-02, 48.21m).

On the Track
Junior Raybryana Dasher (New Bedford, Mass.) recorded a sixth place finish in the 400 meter dash, timing in at 1:00.56. Senior Reme DiGiovanni (Southborough, Mass.) took 10th in her only event; her time of 5:07.00 in the 1500-meter run ranks her second amongst her LEC competitors this spring.

In a tightly-contested 800-meter run, freshman George Papoulis (Haverhill, Mass.) secured a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:57.75. Junior Spencer Lynds (Solon, ME.) ran a personal best in 400 hurdles, placing eighthin 58.89.

Both UMass Dartmouth teams head back to western Massachusetts to compete in the Jerry Gravel Invitational, held at Westfield State next Saturday.
