MEDFORD, Mass. -- Both UMass Dartmouth indoor track & field teams combined to record 18 top 10 performances at the non-scoring Tufts Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Gantcher Center.
Junior George Papoulis (Haverhill, Mass.) set the pace on the men’s side for the Corsairs, as he took top honors in the 600 meters (1:22.53). Senior Joao Baptista (Malden, Mass.) added a runner-up performance in the high jump (1.95 meters/6 feet, ¾ inch), while freshman Steve Stromski (Melrose, Mass.) was fourth in the 3,000 meters (9:07.09). Senior Alex MacMillan (Brockton, Mass.) recorded a fifth place finish in the 200 meters (23.03) and a sixth place performance in the 60 meter dash (7.26) for UMass Dartmouth, which received a fifth place finish in the 400 meters (52.79) from senior Mike Tierney (Norton, Mass.).
Freshman Evan Vasconcellos (Westport, Mass.) was seventh in the 600 meters (1:29.72) for the Corsairs, who received a pair of 10th place performances from senior Jason Karakaedos (Peabody, Mass.) in the mile (4:44.20) and freshman Andrew Swallow (Framingham, Mass.) in the shot put (12.94 meters/42 feet, 5 ½ inches). Both UMass Dartmouth 4 x 400 meter relay teams also enjoyed success on the day, as the “A” quartet of Vasconcellos, juniors Delpiero Beaumont (Dorchester, Mass.) and Matt Holt (Taunton, Mass.) along with sophomore Joshua Brockman (Fall River, Mass.) was sixth in the event with a time of 3:40.07. The Corsair “B” tandem of Papoulis, sophomores Corey Moss (Uxbridge, Mass.) and Tim Chase (Amesbury, Mass.) along with freshman Jake Slack (Lakeville, Mass.) rounded out the men’s competition with a seventh place time of 3:48.56 in the 4 x 400.
Freshman Aaidaliz Perez (Hopedale, Mass.) led the way on the women’s side for UMass Dartmouth, as she posted a third place finish in the long jump (4.83 meters/15 feet, 10 ¼ inches) and a seventh place performance in the 60 meter dash (8:44). Sophomore Emilea Lauzon (Lakeville, Mass.) also collected a pair of top 10 finishes with a seventh place performance in the 200 meters (28.12) and a 10th place finish in the 400 meters (1:07.44) for the Corsairs, who received a third place performance in the shot put (11.50 meters/37 feet, 8 ¾ inches) from junior MacKenzie Garvey (Plymouth, Mass.).
Junior Jess O’Reilly (Millis, Mass.) and sophomore Taylor Walsh (Groveland, Mass.) added respective fourth place performances in the 3,000 meters (10:45.06) and 1,000 meters (3:19.50) for UMass Dartmouth, which also received eighth place finishes from junior Caitlyn Demers (Dartmouth, Mass.) in the 400 meters (1:06.86) and junior Danielle Devine (Bernardston, Mass.) in the high jump (1.50 meters/4 feet, 11 inches).
Both UMass Dartmouth squads travel to Northampton, Mass. next Saturday morning to compete in the Smith Pioneer Invitational that begins at 11:00 am.
