Corsairs Perform Well in Opener at Westfield State

WESTFIELD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's track and field teams performed well at the Jerry Gravel Classic at Westfield State's Jerry Gravel Track Saturday.

The men finished in a tie for 11th in a 16 team field with 18 points. Connecticut was first with 197 points. The women were 12th of 18 teams with 27 points. Springfield was first with 137 points.

For the men, junior Nick Santoro (Shrewsbury, MA/St. John's HS) finished first at 10,000 meters in 33:09.06 and qualified for the Division III New England Championships. Sophomore Hymlaire Lamisere (Newton, MA/Newton North HS/Iona) was seventh in at 100 meters in 11.42 seconds, and senior Matt Lemanski (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow HS) was eighth at 800 meters in 2:00.36. In the triple jump, senior Corey Sleep (Fall River, MA/Durfee HS) was fourth at 42 feet, 5 ¾ inches, and qualified for the D3 New Englands. Three Corsairs just missed placing at 1500 meters- sophomore Kevin Gilmore (Hanson, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS), who won his heat in 4:09.5, senior Tim Whelan (Abington, MA/Abington HS), who finished in 4:12.88, and junior Eric Nygaard (Medway, MA/Medway HS), who ran 4:12.89.

For the women, junior Linee Mello-Frost (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) was second in the 100 meter hurdles in 15.75 seconds, qualifying her for the ECAC Championships, Open New England Championships and Division III New England Championships. Sophomore Brittany Cole (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) was seventh in the shot put at 36 feet, qualifying her for the Division III New Englands, sophomore Stacey Dybel (Littleton, MA/Notre Dame HS) was second at 3000 meters in 13:20.75, and sophomore Emily Migre (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson HS) fifth in the javelin at 108 feet, five inches. The 4 x 100 meter relay team of Mello-Frost, freshman Jillian Van Ness (Agawam, MA/Agawam HS), freshman Morgan Cooper (Sunderland, MA/Frontier Regional HS) and junior Briley Morrill (Whitman, MA/Whitman-Hanson Regional HS) was fifth in 53.11 seconds.

"For our first outdoor meet, it was a good start," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve Gardiner. "It was a good way to see where we are at this point. I was very pleased with several of our performances, particularly Nick Santoro and Linee Mello-Frost."

The Corsairs will return to action when they travel to the Bryant Invitational next Saturday.
