NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's volleyball team visiting Clark and the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in a pair of non-conference volleyball matches at the Tripp Athletic Center Saturday. UMass Dartmouth defeated Clark, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21 and 25-12, and MCLA, 25-11, 25-21 and 25-22. In the other match, Clark defeated MCLA, 25-20, 25-18 and 25-16.
Freshman setter Jess Goncalves (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) led a solid offensive performance for UMass Dartmouth, handing out 43 assists in the opener and 22 in the nightcap while sharing setting duties with sophomore Katie Amalfi (Holliston, MA/Holliston HS), who had 10 assists. Junior outside hitter Eleni Tsaparakis (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk HS) had 18 kills against Clark, sophomore outside hitter Allie Mastrocola (Swansea, MA/Case HS) added 16, sophomore middle hitter Cami Ascher (Natick, MA/Natick HS) contributed 12, and sophomore libero Shannon Brodie (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford HS) added 19 digs. Against MCLA, junior outside hitter Lauren Safioleas (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had 10 kills and Tsaparakis added six.
"Jess did a great job of distributing the ball, and Cami and Allie did a great job in the middle against Clark," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Steve DeRossi. "They were side-by-side in several rotations, and they either got blocks or touches on Clark's two middle hitters, which made them push their offense a little off center, and they lost some of their efficiency. In the second match, MCLA played better in the second and third games, and it gave us a good chance to get some of our younger players some playing time in a competitive situation."
UMass Dartmouth is now 16-6, while Clark is now 6-11 and MCLA is now 11-9. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Wentworth Thursday evening. Clark will host WPI Tuesday evening, while MCLA will host SUNY Cobleskill Wednesday night.
